Surprisingly there are actually two completely different problems, leakage and permeability – and permeability is by far the most insidious and hardest to track down.   Liquids are relatively easy to contain, but in their gas state they can simply permeate through materials.  For example products that include cellulose may be be an almost perfect barrier to water – but they let water vapour through almost as if they weren't there.

The Versaperm VI meter is a highly sensitive and accurate system for measuring this permeability (it optionally works for water vapour or almost any other gas) and it has a truly enormous range of applications.

The equipment is both precise and simple to use.  In some cases it can produce results in as little as 30 minutes, as opposed to the days or even weeks with traditional gravimetric testing. Accuracies are typically in the parts per million range, (parts per billion with some gases) and the equipment is ideal for general testing as well as QC, lab and development work.
